- Abstract
Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among Latina women. Recently, it has been established, the importance of taking into account the traditional values of the Hispanic culture when treating cancer patients. These values include the emphasis on the family and their involvement in the patient's treatment. The objectives of this article are to explore: 1) the reaction of the family members regarding the diagnosis and treatment of the patient, 2) the impact of the patient's family support, and 3) the importance of the family members' involvement in the treatment. The results of this study confirm the importance of delivering health services, not only to the patient, but also to the family system she belongs to. It is important to help the family explore their feelings and fears about the cancer, encourage communication amongst them, assess the impact of the illness on the structural level and encourage the re-organization of the system after the diagnosis, during the treatment, post-treatment, and survivorship phases.
