- Title
Marimba and the Musical Figuring of Desire and Postcolonial National Identity in Edwin Semzaba's Novel Marimba ya Majaliwa.
- Authors
Sanga, Imani
- Abstract
This article discusses the way a musical instrument marimba is figured in relation to social identities and relations in Edwin Semzaba's novel Marimba ya Majaliwa. It argues that the novel creates an imaginary world in which marimba is a central instrument that acts as an object of mimetic desire between the novel's hero and his antagonist. So too, the marimba and the marimba competition are used in the novel to performa tively construct Tanzanian national identity.
