- Abstract
The open prison system facilitates transition management and preparation for release at the end of the imprisonment has an essential influence on the reintegration chances of juvenile prisoners and convicts. Although a number of studies have already examined the relationship between the form of imprisonment and the risk of recidivism, the consideration of key indicators of reintegration (including employment, housing, social support, finances) is often neglected. This article therefore focuses on the question of what the release situation is like for 341 juvenile and adult prisoners from open and closed prisons and what influence the form of imprisonment has on this situation. The release situation is characterized by the named indicators of reintegration, which are also central in transition management. Because prisoners in the open prison system represent a particularly suitable clientele and are subject to corresponding selection criteria, comparability with persons in the closed prison system is limited. For this reason, static and dynamic risk factors (Andrews and Bonta 2010) have been included as control variables. Linear regression analyses are used to test the influence of correctional form and risk factors on the release situation. The results show that the release situation in both the juvenile and the adult penal system is to be evaluated more positively in the open prison than in the closed equivalent and a significant relationship can be confirmed. In this regard, the results point to the positive effects of the open prison. However, since comprehensive preparation for release is time-consuming, the article argues for sustainable planning of all essential aspects for release as well as for an early transfer to open prison.
