- Abstract
Hoffmann is not the first to suggest a Construction Grammar analysis of the CC: [13] is the starting point for this discussion. He turns to the diachronic data in Chapter 3 and sketches how Old English (OE) and Middle English (ME) CC constructions are the predecessors of the PdE CC. Hoffmann, Thomas 2019 English Comparative Correlatives: Diachronic and Synchronic Variation at the Lexicon-Syntax Interface 276 Cambridge University Press 9781108477215 The more you know, the more you realize you don't know. Hoffmann is aware at all times that the CC is a relatively rare occurrence in corpus data, and he tempers all his remarks with this knowledge, especially in the variational study in Chapter 6.
