- Abstract
This article focuses on conservationism and liberalism in Swahili Poetry. The introduction of free verse into Swahili poetry constitutes a case of African artists capitulating to European cultural colonization. Liberalists have responded to this challenge in two different ways. On the one hand, some accept the notion that Swahili free verse has been inspired by English poetry and make no apologies for having adopted this external cultural influence to their own purposes. On the other hand, many members of the liberalist camp plead innocent to the charge of having succumbed to an Anglocentric poetics. They argue that Swahili's traditional prosodic forms are themselves externally inspired.
