- Title
Enlivening the Archive: Glimpsing Embodied Consumption Practices in Probate Inventories of Household Possessions.
- Authors
Evans, Adrian B.
- Abstract
This article argues that probate records can serve as a valuable historical source for both ethnographers and historical geographers. Details are given explaining how probate records contain detailed lists and descriptions of domestic inventories and how the analysis of such inventories can deduce further historical information. The author contends that these records have much to offer the study of past social and cultural practices. Examples are given from the 17th- and 18th-centuries illustrating the historiographical technique by analyzing probate records of West Suffolk and East Sussex, England.
