- Abstract
The article describes the effects of treatment in a constructed wetland on the toxicity of textile wastewater. The article also draws conclusions about the utility and limitations of constructed wetlands for treatment of textile effluents. The wetland used in the study is located in Toccoa, Georgia. Since the wetland was built to ameliorate chronic toxicity in the wastewater, several aquatic toxicity tests were performed and extensive chemical analysis was done to understand the effect of wetlands on aquatic toxicity. The results show that passage through the wetland made the effluent less toxic. However, the saline control water was more toxic than the wastewater. Changes in several components of the wastewater was significant after passage through the wetland. Changes in concentrations of some of the inorganic ions after treatment in the wetland were also statistically significant. The concentration of calcium and magnesium increased as a result of wetland treatment. On four different occasions, samples were taken for analysis of alkylphenols and their microbial degradation products. Analyses show that nonylphenol was present in all samples at levels above detection limit, but octylphenol was barely detectable.
