- Abstract
The article presents information on the opportunities and challenges for process modelling in surface and heat treatment operations. The utility of process modelling in providing benchmark values, or acting as a soft sensor, for process optimisation and online control of unit operation is well established for some of surface and heat treatment operations. For widespread implementation of these solutions, there is a need to develop generic models that can be easily customised, tuned and adapted for different operations while maintaining their predictive capabilities. A public website for surface and heat treating process models, similar to the online resources such as Materials Algorithm Project, hosted by Cambridge University, could well assist proliferation of this approach.
