The author discusses the function of early modern investing as seen in the play "Merchant of Venice," by William Shakespeare. She cites several investment schemes by the play's characters, including the sea-based ventures by merchant Antonio, the matrimonial enterprise of Bassanio, and Portia's investment to secure a matrimonial future. The "Oxford English Dictionary" defines invest as the use of money to buy anything from which interest or profit is expected.
