- Abstract
The study examines the differences in outcomes between older patients with end-stage renal failure who receive peritoneal dialysis (PD) or hemodialysis (HD). The PD group showed a lower incidence of serious cardiac and cerebrovascular events, as well as a lower malignancy rate compared to the HD group. However, the PD group had a higher infection rate. The study emphasizes that PD is also a suitable dialysis option for older patients and that the decision between HD and PD depends on the individual preferences and social environment of the patient. A multicenter, prospective cohort study in France investigated the association between overnight stays in the emergency department (ED) and mortality in older patients. The results showed that patients who stayed overnight in the ED had a significantly higher hospital mortality, a higher risk of adverse events, and a longer length of stay than patients admitted before midnight. In particular, older patients who needed help with activities of daily living had a higher mortality rate. The study emphasizes the importance of systematically assessing frailty in the ED and geriatric triage tools to identify high-risk patients early and reduce long lengths of stay.
