- Title
Things (Not) to Do with Breasts in Public: Maternal Embodiment and the Biocultural Politics of Infant Feeding.
- Authors
Hausman, Bernice L.
- Abstract
This article discusses representations of breastfeeding in the media and explores the cultural and biological implications of breastfeeding. The author notes the general lack of images of breasts in public service announcements, posters, print ads and websites that discuss breast feeding. Cultural resistance to public breastfeeding and to maternal images of breasts are noted, and the author suggests that the cultural representation of breasts encourages disembodiment among mothers.
