- Abstract
We performed long-term expeditionary and stationary studies in the taiga of northwestern Russia (1958–2018) to characterize the abundance, biotopic distribution, nutrition, reproduction, spatial and ecological structure of the population, and the dynamics of abundance of water voles, including those associated with their habitation at the northwestern boundaries of its range. In the European part of the range, especially near the northwestern boundaries, the water vole has become an increasingly narrow stenotope with a clear manifestation of synanthropism (in particular, with an increased attraction to vegetable gardens and household plots). Adult and young voles of early spring–summer litters, producing up to two litters per season (on average, from 6.5 ± 0.37 pups (overwintered) and 5.7 ± 0.41 (underyearlings)), are involved in reproduction. The abundance fluctuates significantly over the years under the influence of sharp changes in the hydrological regime of water bodies.
