- Abstract
THERE is considerable interest at present in the suggestion of Weiss1 that the primary reducing species produced by irradiation of water is a hydrated electron, the lifetime of which is long enough for it to be important in chemical reactions. Recently Boag and Hart2 have detected a transient species produced by electron irradiation of water. The species, which gives rise to a broad optical absorption spectrum with a peak at 7000 Å, is postulated to be the hydrated electron. Similar absorption spectra, but with peaks at 5800 Å, have been observed from γ- or X-irradiated alkaline ice at 77° K and are also attributed to trapped electrons3,4. Studies4,5 of the electron spin resonance spectra of irradiated alkaline ice at 77° K have shown that in addition to lines arising from ·OH radicals and O− ions there is a narrow singlet (g = 2.006) which is attributed to trapped electrons.
