- Abstract
There are about 12,000 public buildings in Slovakia. Despite several support programmes aimed at their renovation, majority of the public buildings still need renovation. Due to several decades of under-financing of the public sector, there is a significant renovation gap. In Bratislava region (BR), there is 831 public subjects. Classified as a developed region, BR was not eligible for financing under ESIF (2014-2020), which included sources for renovation of public buildings. However, public buildings in the Bratislava region are most probably in a similar technical state as those in other regions, if not even worse. This eligibility exclusion means not only less buildings renovated in the region, but a challenge of fulfilment of EU obligation. This is because, majority of the central governmental buildings, which are subject to the renovation obligation under Art. 3 of Energy Efficiency Directive, are located in this region. The aim of the article is to provide an overview of data on public buildings in the BR, to point out the risks of its exclusion from ESIF (2014-2020) financing, as well as to provide recommendations for both regional and national authorities.
