- Abstract
The article presents a discussion of the history of Japanese dolls in America, focusing on the ways in which they represented Japanese culture in American literature and art of the 19th and early 20th century. A brief overview is provided of the history of dolls in Japan and the importation of such dolls to the U.S. Several examples of the portrayal of Japanese dolls in American popular culture, such as illustrations and poetry, are presented.
