- Abstract
The article discusses the symbolism of hands in North American archaeology and ethnology. It explains the significance of the orientation of symbols to the interpretation of their meaning. According to the author, images of five-fingered hands pointed upward on an object are considered beneficent to persons who used them. Also explored is the occurrence of hand motifs during prehistoric times found in such artifacts as ceramic vessels, palettes, cups and adornments.
