The article discusses the significance of several early Christian and Hellenistic parallels, as seen through examination of a passage from the Shepherd of Hermas. Topics addressed include an interpretation of the portent seen in the passage, details on the manipulatory use of the art of divination, and the association of the wandering mantics with the cults of Serapis and the Great Mother.
