- Abstract
The E14 Inscription is a copperplate measuring at 47 cm x 7 cm, engraved with four lines of Old Javanese texts on both surfaces. This inscription is preserved in the reserve collection of the Museum of Indonesia, Jakarta, which is still undeciphered. The objective of this research is to determine the content of E14 inscription and its palaeographic features in order to ascertain its dating, language and historical significance. This study shows that E14 inscription is a private document recording a land dispute when the ownership a piece of land belonging to a person was unlawfully transferred by the family of a local chieftain with the help of an official. The palaeography of this inscription shows the characteristics of 14th Century Old Javanese script, used especially during the Majapahit period. It appears that the inscription was engraved hastily without proper planning as evident from the characters which were not being properly executed. This inscription could have been a copy of an earlier version of the document, possibly produced by copyist(s) who were not well-trained scribes. The colloquial language used in this inscription conform to those which were used in most epigraphs of the Majapahit period. The sentences are short, austere, and unsophisticated while the grammatical structure is rudimentary. Aside from Old Javanese, Sanskrit and Old Malay words were also found in the inscription. This inscription gives an important insight into the 14th century Javanese society, especially in terms of its language, literacy and writing system.
