- Abstract
Motherhood is a social construct in which women put their identity in order to raise children. Being a mother is influenced by the society and the family the woman was raised and spent her life in. The patriarchal society usually defines women as mothers, while their identity as individuals is often disregarded. In regard to this, we can notice that slave mothers are not considered as parents at all. Their reaction to separation is silenced because it is not relevant. Their maternal experiences are untold and this makes us more determined to shift our attention from father to mother, since we feel the urge to sympathize with the role of a slave mother in the society. The aim of this paper is to present the (im)possibility of motherhood and the influence of slavery in Toni Morrison’s Beloved. The paper focuses on the main female characters and their intertwined mutual relations by using social, psychoanalytical and feminist theories.
