- Abstract
Latest EFL studies focus on the learner and his/her individual characteristics, proposing that it is him/her who is to be "blamed" for setting and reaching cognitive goals. It is suggested that individual achievements are based upon the use of learning strategies which control all learning processes such as task fulfillment, integrating previously acquired and factual knowledge into new conceptualizations etc. Whether a strategy is used or not depends on the learner, and this choice distinguishes successful from less successful learners. Choosing proper strategies for a certain learning situations depend on the learner's ability to identify them as well as his/her awareness. Language awareness is inevitably connected to the proficiency level which raises questions as to whether the choice of strategies depends on it as well.
