- Abstract
The article investigates the degree and maintenance of idealized images in the marriage relationship. Idealization is not a new issue in marriage research. In a study of marriage patterns among Detroit couples, researchers found that the wives in their study reported having fewer arguments with their spouses than occur in the "average family." Obviously, everyone cannot have fewer arguments than the average family. Twenty-six students in Harvard University married student housing were asked to take part in a study on person perception. Half the respondents had been married between 6 and 18 months; the other half had been married between 3 and 12 years. Subjects were asked to rate the degree to which each of three stimulus persons ,self, spouse, and an acquaintance, possessed each of the traits. Each subject completed the task for all three stimulus persons; the same adjectives were used for each person, although three different orders of the adjectives were used. In addition, the order in which the three stimulus persons were rated was varied.
