In the article, the author presents a history of efforts to achieve systemic and transformative change in environmental justice in the U.S. Also cited are the effects of systemic racism on environmental disparities, how natural disasters like flooding gave a new sense of urgency and visibility for environmental justice, and the intergenerational protests against issues like criminal justice, energy justice, health justice, and transportation justice.
