- Abstract
In our country it is intended to enable the students to acquire important social life related knowledge, skill and values through Social Studies taught in the Elementary Schools. In an examination of the latest curriculum of this course regarded as a tool for citizenship education and the corresponding course books some changes stand out. One of these changes, probably the most important one is the transition to multicultural education. Multicultural education is a newish phenomenon that has appeared in conjunction with the globalization. The globalization process influencing the whole world has worn down the conception of nation-state thus leading to abandoning this model. As a result, multicultural policies, a new conception highlighting the differences have been adopted. This paradigm has brought about changes both in our consciousness of citizenship and education system. The course that we can determine this change well in is Social Studies taught in the elementary schools. In this study it is aimed to determine to what extent and how the multicultural education is included in the latest social studies curriculum and the corresponding course books. Therefore, in the study the document analysis (documentary scanning) technique included in the qualitative research methods was applied for the examination of social studies curriculum and course books. At the end of the research it was determined that multicultural education was highlighted in the latest social studies curriculum and the course books. Moreover, it was determined that not too strict conception was developed; on the contrary, a lenient transition was intended.
