- Abstract
This article analyzes the behavior of the banking concentration index for placements (credits), deposits and equity from 1993 to 2004 and correlates banking concentration for credit, deposits and the number of universal and commercial banks with a financial intermediation index. To achieve these objectives, a Herfindahl-Hirshman concentration index was used, the quotient between total bank placements and total public deposits. The Pearson coefficient was used to make the correlations. Results showed that between 1993 and 2004, the concentration level of universal and commercial banks was moderate; the correlation between the number of banks and the concentration of placements, deposits and equity was low (in the negative) and with little significance; financial intermediation showed a low tendency from 1997 on. Conclusions were that the existence of a moderately concentrated market with low financial intermediation comes from what is attractive to many banks, investing in stocks, especially of a public nature, than performing placement operations for loans, the existence of financial innovations and the intervention of the Venezuelan State as a lender through banks and national funds.
