- Abstract
The modern psychological concept of mindfulness does not have parallels only in Buddhism, but also in various other spiritual traditions. Since the capacity for mindfulness as a specific way of focusing attention is one of the innate human mental abilities, it can be assumed that many cultures in different places of the world and in different periods of history have each discovered and developed this useful mental skill in their own way. In more detail, the article focuses on an analysis of mindfulness in Christian spiritual practices, especially in hesychasm as one of the oldest such practices. In the same way as the two central pillars for developing mindfulness are in Buddhism the meditations of samatha and vipassana, and in the secular-psychological practice of mindfulness these are awareness of breathing and objectless awareness, so in Christianity we can recognize two such pillars in the application of the concept of nepsis and in the practice of the Jesus prayer as well as the rosary. Also presented are neptic or Orthodox Psychotherapy and some other intersections of mindfulness, Christian spirituality, and psychotherapy. It seems reasonable that psychological and psychotherapy science maintain openness (and at the same time the relevant scientific critical stance) to knowledge about mindfulness which has accumulated over the centuries within various spiritual traditions.
