- Title
TRACING CULTURAL MIGRATION THROUGH MUSIC: AN INQUIRY APPROACH TO ENHANCING GLOBAL UNDERSTANDING.
- Authors
Brouillette, Liane; Feder, Stephanie
- Abstract
The article focuses on how enhanced global awareness develops naturally through adopting a discovery approach to world geography. It offers information on Mapping the Beat, an innovative curriculum funded by the periodical "National Geographic," which builds on the interest of students in popular music to initiate a process of geographic discovery. It discusses the evolution of African-American musical traditions from sorrow songs sung in the fields to rap music at the top of the music charts. Furthermore, it says that the Mapping the Beast curriculum provides a stronger and more immediate connection with world cultures and geography rather than the study of textbooks alone, as it provides students an opportunity to explore varied cultural perspectives.
