- Title
Kierkegaard's Mirror (of Erised).
- Authors
Hunter, Joel B.
- Abstract
In this article, the author discusses the function of the Mirror of Erised in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter book series. He argues that the Mirror of Erised confronts the viewer with the self's main obstacle to rising above the aesthetic stage of life, and is existential in nature. However, the Mirror does not instruct the isolated viewer in any purpose other than the instrumental. The Mirror rises above both the self that is represented in the image and the self that gazes into it. It confronts readers in the technological world and about the importance of free choices.
