- Title
PFAS Treatment System Ensures Safe Drinking Water for Rural Community.
- Abstract
The Town of Maysville, N.C. faced high levels of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in its water supply well in 2019. To address this issue, TRC Companies obtained emergency funding to assess the contamination, evaluate treatment options, and modify the town's water treatment plant. They worked with Emerging Compounds Treatment Technologies to develop a four-stage treatment process involving aeration, greensand, granular activated carbon (GAC), and ion-exchange resin. This system successfully reduced PFAS levels from 1,400 ng/L to less than 4 ng/L, making it the first of its kind in North Carolina for treating groundwater for PFAS. The project cost $1.5 million and involved a staff of three with one operator.
