- Abstract
The article discusses the portrayal of the United States in "One of Ours," by Willa Cather. According to the author, the books portrays the residents of Frankfort, Nebraska--a town that represents materialism and religious fanaticism--during World War I. The character Bayliss, brother of the character Claude, is modeled on Henry Ford, founder of Ford Motor Company. The town's evangelical fanaticism can be seen in the historical figure of John Harvey Kellogg. In the course of the novel, Claude comes to equate American culture with that of his German enemies.
