- Abstract
American mink in Patagonia: an historical and socio-ecological analysis of research and management. The American mink (Neovison vison) was brought to Patagonia for fur farming purposes and subsequently established itself in the wild. At present, it is the most widely distributed exotic carnivore in Patagonia (Argentina y Chile), and consequently a number of studies and projects have been developed in the last few years to generate relevant information for its management. From a literature review, we synthesized regional knowledge and used historical and socio-ecological perspectives to better understand the current state (achievements and information gaps) and future projections of both scientific research and applied management of this species. Currently, there is a propitious scenario regarding information (including 105 publications) for the design of holistic management strategies of American mink, compared to other exotic species with fewer studies. However, despite the numerous publications, we found little implementation or prioritization by managers. This lack of control actions and few scientific studies directly oriented towards questions that allow better management of this species show a relatively weak link between academia and managers, as well as the use of information and scientific evidence in management decisions.
