- Abstract
In this article, "The Baptism of Christ", which was painted by Jacopo Robusti Tintoretto in 1570, is analyzed according to Erwin Panofsky's iconographic and iconological art analysis. This painting is an important work of Italian mannerist movement. The analysis consists of three stages under the headings of natural (primary) subject matter, conventional (secondary) subject matter) and tertiary meaning (intrinsic meaning or content). This work of art, which depicts a Biblical story, describes an important religious ritual in Christianity. Besides, the study analyzes how the artist adapted to his painting such a religious ritual which is attached much value by the Christian community. Also, the style of the painting, the composition setup, the theme and contents, the style of the artist, the symbols used, the art movements of the time and then social values are discussed as well as emphasizing Panofsky's method of analysis (iconographic and iconoligical analysis), which is used in the studying of work of arts in art education.
