- Abstract
The article discusses the settlement of Jamestown, Virginia by members of the Virginia Company of London in 1607 and provides an overview of primary source material related to the settlement of Jamestown. Details are provided about the arrival of Poles to Jamestown in 1608 and about the social and economic roles of the Poles in the settlement. Excerpts from the writings of English colonist John Smith regarding the roles of Poles in the settlement are presented. According to the article, Poles were brought to the colony to provide artisan and glass-making services, but also aided in the defense of the settlement from Indians.
