- Abstract
The article investigates counter-hegemony taking place through the emergence and growth of the Hawaiian language immersion movement, by making reference to philosopher Antonio Gramsci's theory of hegemony. It mentions that the movement saved both the Hawaiian culture and the Hawaiian language. It presents views of Keiki Housman, one of the leaders of the movement, on learning mother tongue as second-language speakers and passing it to children as their first language.
