- Abstract
A critique is presented of the depictions of gender in the 2009 film "Star Trek" directed by J. J. Abrams and owned by entertainment company National Amusements, compared with the 1960s television series "Star Trek" owned by Desilu Productions. The economic aspects of popular culture, the 2008 U.S. recession, and Desilu owner and actress Lucille Ball are mentioned, as well as gender and racial stereotypes and "Star Trek" characters such as Uhura.
