- Title
JOSEPH UNTHANK AND HIS BOOK: AN ENGLISH FRIEND IN EIGHTEENTH-CENTURY NORTH CAROLINA.
- Abstract
The article presents one of the least appreciated books found in the Friends Historical Collection at Guilford College of North Carolina which is identified only as "Joseph Unthank's Book." The book chronicles the spiritual life of the New Garden community of Friends during the 1750s and is considered as the oldest surviving historical narrative on the North Carolina Quaker family. Two major sections of Joseph Unthank's book are reproduced in the article, one of which contains sermons of ministers in New Garden between 1756 and 1770 and the other contains the author's family history. It is noted that the book provides the only account of certain events including the way Quakers handled their conflict with Indians in 1760 and the role of early New Garden Friend ministers.
