- Abstract
This article discusses the significance of teaching history in Panama as a method of understanding culture. It focuses on the development of a republican historiography as well as the role of history education in the creation of a national identity. The author also comments on the state of history education at the beginning of the 21st century and suggests renovating, updating, and adapting it. The main tendencies present in Panamanian history education throughout the 20th century, including aspects of positivism and Marxism, are also explored.
