- Abstract
Livestock farming is a major contributor to deforestation, with almost 40% of global deforestation occurring in the Amazon and Indonesia. Animal farming also accounts for 12% to 20% of global greenhouse gas emissions, making it a significant contributor to the climate crisis. Governments provide billions of dollars in subsidies for animal agriculture each year. Additionally, the use of antibiotics in livestock is contributing to the rise of antibiotic resistance. Meat-heavy diets are linked to higher rates of cancer and heart disease. Factory farms and feedlots emit numerous air-polluting gases and produce large amounts of manure that often contaminates waterways.
