- Abstract
Mathematics education research supports rigorous, thoughtful and purposeful mathematical exploration in early learning classrooms. The importance of specific learning intentions in mathematics is not always highlighted in curriculum documents. During a comprehensive examination of studies on subitizing and part-whole relationships, it became evident that learning activities that support the acquisition of these concepts were critical to young learners' development and deeper understanding of mathematics. This article provides an analysis of the research and many practical ideas to promote mathematical understanding in an early learning classroom. As a practising teacher, the author was able to apply her work in a typical kindergarten classroom setting.
