- Abstract
We study welded joints of 6-mm-thick annealed sheets of D16M aluminum alloy (Al-Cu-Mg), an analog of the foreign 2024 alloy, currently regarded as difficultly welded. The joints are obtained by the method of pulsed-arc consumable electrode welding with one (Al-6.3Cu-0.3Mn) or two (Al-6.3Cu-0.3Mn and Al-5.5Si or Al-6.3Cu-0.3Mn and Al-12Si) filler wires. We analyzed the regularities of changes in the microstructure, hardness, strength, and cyclic crack resistance of the joints after welding and also after subsequent aging or quenching and aging after welding. It is shown that the strength of welded joints after thermal treatment does not exceed 70% of strength of the base metal and is comparable with the strength in the state after welding.
