- Abstract
David Charlton's book, "Popular Opera in Eighteenth-Century France: Music and Entertainment before the Revolution," challenges previous historical narratives by examining the repertory of popular opera in France. Charlton defines popular opera as comedy where dialogue occurs in both music and speech, rather than focusing on public approval. He explores the conflict between French and Italian opera in Paris and argues for a mutual assimilation between the two. Charlton's book provides a comprehensive and systematic analysis of the development of popular opera in France, shedding new light on the musical culture of pre-revolutionary France.
