Art playing the game of design and design playing the game of art? Notes on public art and social design.

- Abstract
Theoretical approaches that try to defne public art and distinguish it from other forms of aesthetic practice esp. in architecture, urban planning, and design tend to argue with an outdated account of the scope of design. In the same way, design theories work with a modernist and therefore outdated understanding of art. From the perspective of art, design is seen as a service of functional optimization, and from the perspective of design, art is seen as a purely autonomous practice. This essay gives a comparative analysis of contemporary forms of public art and social design in order to overcome this problematic opposition and argue for a functional dimension of art as well as criticality and autonomy in design.
