- Abstract
Due to the Second World War more than 400.000 people were evacuated from the areas that Finland lost to the Soviet Union. These people, most of them Karelians, were settled in other parts of Finland. In this article the author analyzes how this population movement is dealt with in history textbooks and how the memories of it are present in the historical culture of Finland. With this example she wants to discuss the various uses of a single historical theme, and the different functions, levels, and forms, in which historical memory can be expressed.
