- Title
Ageing live ringed seals ( Phoca hispida): Which tooth to pull?
- Authors
Chambellant, Magaly; Ferguson, Steven H.
- Abstract
The article presents a study which examines the precision and accuracy of using a post-canine or incisor tooth instead of the canine for age determination in ringed seals. Accuracy of age estimates was addressed through the difference observed between ages estimated using first post-canine and second incisor and ages estimated using canine teeth in the absence of known-age material. The authors recommended preferentially extracting the first post-canine versus the second incisor in live ringed seals due to larger size and cementum deposition, greater ease of manipulation during the different steps of tooth preparation for ageing and greater relative accuracy.
