- Abstract
The records of the Royal Hospital for Seamen at Greenwich, usually known as Greenwich Hospital, offer a unique insight into the lives and careers of eighteenth-century seamen. Based upon a database of approximately 8000 entrants prior to 1763, this essay examines the origins, working lives and careers of the "poor decayed seamen" who inhabited the Hospital and also sheds light on the day-to-day functioning of an institution that is very well known but has hitherto received surprisingly little scholarly attention.
