- Abstract
Bulgaria is a Balkan and European country where different ethnic and religious communities have lived together for centuries. After the withdrawal of the Ottoman Empire from this region, the Bulgarian Muslims have been in a struggle to protect their identity and pass it on to future generations. Today, the research activities in the field of religious education in Bulgaria are very important in terms of the future of Muslims. For this purpose, the religious education given in Nüvvab Madrasa, operating in Shumen, Bulgaria in the years of 1922-1947 was thoroughly examined. Although the curriculum included topics such as Turkish History and History of Turkish Literature, the Madrasatu'n Nuvvab was defined as a religious school by some people. Conversely, the school also provided Arabic, Turkish and Science lessons along with the religious ones. The multi-functioned Nuvvab School has played a very important and positive role in the educational life of Bulgarian Muslims and met their religious and scientific needs for years. The religious education included fields of religious study as fiqh, usul al-fiqh, The Holy Qur'an, kalam and akhlaq. The research comprises topics as organisational statute and programme, educational levels (secondary and high), management, tasks and activities of students. In this way, the contribution of this institution to the scientific and cultural life of Bulgaria and the points that the current education system would benefit from were underlined. And as a final the abolition of Madrasatu'n Nuvvab was scrutinised.
