- Abstract
The article discusses the roles of judicial retirement and pensions, as well as judicial independence, in a 1937 dispute about court-packing of the U.S. Supreme Court. Topics include the role of retirement law in a plan by U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt, the proposals of Progressive Era reformers for judicial retirement, and 1932 legislation cutting the salaries and pensions of judges. The role of U.S. Congressman Hatton Sumners in the controversy is addressed.
