- Abstract
The word aq means white and milk, dairy products, truth, justice, innocence, wasteland etc., which also are connotated by the colour white, in almost all of Turkic languages and dialects. However, the word aq has a homonym with a contradicting meaning in Uzbek, Turkmen, Kyrgyz and Azeri Turkic, which are spoken in the middle-southern regions of the Turkic world. This aq also exists in Iranian languages co-existing with the aforementioned Turkic languages except Kyrgyz. This article aims to determine the origin of word aq with the contradictory meaning to colour white. The relation of the phrase eh etmek in Turkish child language together with the idioms ah etmek “to curse” and ah almak “to be cursed” to aq is also tackled.
