- Abstract
The article discusses early Celtic Christian Saint Columba, born in Donegal, Ireland in 521, dying on Iona, Scotland in 597. The first biography of him was written only a few years after his death circa 600 and was entitled "Amra Choluimb Chille," attributed to Irish poet Dallán Forgaill, and it focused on his aestheticism and his scholarly achievements in Christian studies, mathematics, and astronomy. Later hagiographies spoke of his miracles and he was patron saint of Scotland prior to Saint Andrew. The article considers how representations of Columba maintained his popularity among Scots throughout the centuries, even being adopted by Protestants after the Reformation as an early example of anti-Roman sentiment. Celebrations commemorating his death in 1897 are detailed.
