How to keep your crown.
- Authors
Carter, Miranda
- Abstract
The article discusses how George V, former king of England, retained power despite the assassinations and abdications of other European kings and emperors. The author notes the autocratic ruling style and repressive policies of emperors such as former Russian tsar Nicholas II and former German emperor Wilhelm II. She comments that George shared their disdain for social change but lacked political power and discusses his efforts to promote positive public opinion about the British monarchy as a way of retaining his throne following World War I. His reluctant cooperation with the British Labour Party is noted.
