The article analyses Herman Melvilleʼs novel "Pierre; or, the Ambiguities." It mentions that novel presents one episode in which the titular protagonist Pierre Glendinning refuses to provide his daguerreotype portrait to "Captain Kid Monthly," roaring in anger at its piratical editor. It reveals that daguerreotype has an influence on the literary representations of portraits in terms of temporality.
